Calvatia gigantea or Giant Puffball is found through the central and eastern United States, Canada and Europe. They have been traditionally used as a dressing for wounds as well as tinder. American Indians would use the fumes of the smoldering fruit bodies to calm bees, allowing easier access to the nest. They would also use it as incense, believing that it would help keep away bad spirits.

Giant puffball grows on the ground, feeding on dead organic matter. It has a white fleshy interior that becomes greenish brown as it matures. It can grow to be 10 to 50 centimetres, occasionally reaching 90 centimetres. To be edible, it must harvested young, when still white and solid and should be eaten soon after harvest as it does not keep very well.
